New Minecraft Update 1.21: The Tricky Trials What’s New?

The Tricky Trials

The Tricky Trials Update officially launched on June 13, and soon you can explore all its new features on both Minecraft: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition!

Packed with thrilling adventures and unexpected rewards, the Tricky Trials Update invites you to search for trial chambers and face the challenges within these vast copper structures. Battle new adversaries like the bogged and the breeze as you seek out the elusive trial key. Unlock your rewards from the vault, a special block that adds fun to your adventures regardless of your party size.

Let’s dive in and discover what’s new in this Minecraft update.

DISCOVER THE TRIAL CHAMBERS

Trial chambers, a new structure in the update, are packed with traps, tricks, and treasures! The origin of these sprawling copper structures is unknown (or if someone knows, they didn’t tell me!), but inside you’ll find a host of new challenges, mobs to battle, rewards to claim, and blocks to build with. This new Minecraft update brings more excitement to the game.

ADVENTURE SOLO OR WITH FRIENDS

With danger lurking at every turn and chambers filled with traps, it’s wise to team up and explore the trial chambers with friends. (Not sure how to get your group together? Learn how to play multiplayer on either Bedrock Edition or Java Edition). The challenges may increase in chaos with more players, and the fights will still be tough, but remember: friends who slay together stay together, and everyone gets rewards from the vault!

MEET THE MOBS THAT LURK THERE

As you venture down the oxidized corridors of the trial chambers, you’ll encounter trial spawners that unleash hordes of hostile mobs! You might even meet two new hostile mobs: the breeze and the bogged. The breeze, with its impressive eyebrows, has a powerful projectile attack that sends foes flying. This elusive mob loves to leap in dizzying circles around players, making it hard to hit with arrows. To defeat a breeze, you’ll need to be quick on your feet and even quicker with your sword! Watch out for the bogged too, a poisonous skeleton as at home in the trial chambers as it is in muddy Overworld swamps.

Dressed in rags and covered in moss and mushrooms (cute!), this foe will use its poisonous power to make your trial as difficult as possible. Can someone remind me to add milk to my trial chamber preparation list?

REAP THE REWARDS

The vault, a new block in the Tricky Trials Update, rewards every player with valuable loot in exchange for a trial key! Unlike chests, which can be emptied by one player in a Realm (usually one of my brothers…), the vault gives rewards to every player in your adventuring party who unlocks it with a trial key! But how do you get that key? It’s simple: defeat all the mobs from the spawner. Doesn’t sound too hard, does it? If you think it sounds easy, don’t worry! This new Minecraft update has something for you, too.

LEVEL UP YOUR CHALLENGE

If you’re the type who sees an “Ominous” label and thinks “sounds delicious!”, then ominous trials are for you. This new feature, part of a broader system of optional challenges, includes village raids, perfect for players who crave extra danger in their Overworld adventures. To initiate an ominous trial or a village raid, find an ominous bottle and drink from it to gain the aptly named Bad Omen effect. Ominous bottles can be dropped by raid captains or found in vaults. From there, choose your ominous path: enter a village to trigger an illager raid (sorry!) or head into the trial chambers to transform your Bad Omen effect into a Trial Omen effect, triggering an ominous trial.

Ominous trials are like regular trials but tougher. With the Trial Omen effect, trial spawners will release stronger mobs (with better armor!) as well as potions and projectiles. Fight until the spawner resets, and you may be rewarded with an ominous trial key, which unlocks ominous vaults, containing rare loot like the heavy core, essential for crafting the new mace!

SMASH YOUR FOES, OR LEAP TO VICTORY

The mace, a new weapon in the Tricky Trials Update, is smashing—literally. Crafted with a breeze rod (dropped by breezes) and a heavy core (found only in ominous vaults), this weapon makes you feel more powerful than a charged creeper. Use its smash attack while falling to knock back enemies. The longer the fall, the stronger the smash. The mace also has three unique enchantments. The Density enchantment increases damage from falling smash attacks, the Breach enchantment penetrates even the toughest armor (gold-clad zombies, beware!), and the Wind Charge enchantment lets you leap high in the air after a successful smash attack, making it easier to chain attacks.

If you prefer flight over fight, defeat a breeze to obtain a wind charge. This powerful gust deals damage on contact and sends foes flying. It also boosts your jumping ability with its knockback effect. Wheeee!

BUILD WITH NEW DECORATIVE BLOCKS

In addition to the copper bulb, a redstone-toggled light source that dims and brightens based on its oxidization level, there are new tuff and copper blocks for that overdue base extension. Embrace copper with the copper trapdoor, copper door, copper grate, and chiseled copper block, all of which can oxidize and be waxed and scraped. Tuff blocks now come in various craftable forms, allowing you to chisel, polish, and transform them into stairs, slabs, bricks, or walls. Bring a touch of the trial chambers home—or better yet, move your base into the trial chambers themselves!

DECORATE YOUR BASE WITH 20 NEW PAINTINGS

The Tricky Trials Update introduces twenty new paintings to Minecraft. Five of these are created by Mojang Studios’ own Game Artist Sarah Boeving, and the other fifteen are by Kristoffer Zetterstrand, the artist behind classics like “Skull on Fire” and “Pigscene”! I’m planning to expand my base to include an art gallery dedicated to these new paintings! I’ll have rooms with different themes: sea-themed, baroque-themed, and skeleton-themed! Maybe I’ll make it extra realistic by building the walls with bones and setting it on fire. But wait, does that mean I have to venture into the Nether again? That didn’t go so well last time…

BRING A PIECE OF THE TRIAL CHAMBERS HOME WITH YOU

What’s a trip to a hostile-mob-filled trial chamber without some souvenirs? Decorate your base (or armor) with mementos from your trial chamber adventures using new armor trims, pottery sherds, and banners included in the update. Show off your victory over the breeze with the flow or bolt armor trims (found as vault rewards!), or declare your allegiance to #TeamBreeze with the guster banner. Personally, I’m excited to expand my decorated pot collection with three new pottery sherds!

UNWIND FROM YOUR CHALLENGE WITH AUTO-CRAFTING

After all that excitement, your inventory will likely be full of new items and maces to craft. Enter the crafter, a powerful new block that uses redstone for automated crafting. Select a recipe, add stacks of ingredients, supply a redstone pulse, and presto! In just a few ticks, your auto-crafted item will appear in the Minecraft world.

Final Words

In conclusion, the Tricky Trials Update is set to revolutionize your Minecraft experience with a wealth of new content and challenges. From daring adventures in the trial chambers to thrilling encounters with new mobs, and the introduction of powerful new items like the mace, there’s something for every player. The addition of ominous trials and village raids will test even the bravest adventurers, while new decorative blocks and the auto-crafting crafter block enhance building and crafting. Don’t forget to collect the twenty new paintings to decorate your base and showcase your artistic side.

Whether you’re exploring solo or with friends, the Tricky Trials Update promises endless fun and excitement in the world of Minecraft. Get ready to dive in and discover all the incredible new features this new Minecraft update has to offer!
